White Paper

Description:
Data de-duplication technology is getting a lot of attention among practitioners -- and with good reason. The technology promises benefits such as reducing storage disks for backup and restore of data, increasing performance and reliability, and cutting storage costs.

Data de-duplication is generally available on systems designed specifically for disk backup, Whitner says. “The normal interfaces are NAS [Network Attached Storage] shares or presentations — iSCSI [Internet Small Computer System Interface] and Fibre Channel.”

The technology can be used in some archival applications, Whitner says. “Its value will vary, depending on the amount of redundant data in the archive and the access patterns required.

“A few de-duplication systems allow the mixing of deduplicated storage with conventional, non-de-duplicated shares in the same system, allowing users to leverage a single solution to manage multiple backup and archive tasks.”

Jackson says Data Domain’s de-duplication technology can use the same system as a target for backup and archive data. “The archive data can be sent to the Data Domain system by an archiving application or by what we refer to as ‘direct access’ similar to ‘drag and drop’ or using some other application to move data to the de-duplication system,” Jackson says.
